Student's project focuses on human trafficking

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An Horry Georgetown Technical College student is working to make sure people along the Grand Strand know about the dangers of human trafficking.

Shelley Sasser is a member of the Phi Kappa Theta honors society at HGTC, and she’s been working for months on a project on human trafficking.

Sasser and other team members put together research and a presentation on their findings in order to take the presentation on the road to give to people in different areas.

“It’s a compilation of hard work and months of looking at the news to learn more about what’s going on here locally and then also national and international news, just putting things together,” Sasser said.

In the presentation, Sasser talks about statistics regarding how bad a problem human trafficking is. She also teaches about how people become victims of human trafficking and how to avoid it.

Sasser has spoken at four different sites so far, and she has three more presentations planned.

The upcoming ones are:

  • Pee Dee Academy in Mullins, Friday, Jan. 18 at 8:15 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.
  • Boys and Girls Club of Florence Friday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.
  • Lowcountry Preparatory School in Pawleys Island (tentative) Feb. 1 at 12 p.m.

The presentations are free and open to the public.
