Drug arrests up in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The drug epidemic continues as narcotics arrests are up this year in Myrtle Beach compared to the corresponding period of time in 2018.

Data on the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s website shows there were 41 drug-related arrests and incidents the first 10 days of 2018.

This year, the number is more than double that, at 94 drug-related arrests. Those events range from misdemeanor drug charges to major crimes involving opioids.

Community activists like Bennie Swan said the Grand Strand is at war.

“It’s so disheartening. Young people whether black, brown - they’re old, they’re young. They don’t go in to become addicted. They go to a doctor to get a pill. The pill runs out, the script runs out and the field is on for purchasing drugs off the street,” Swan said. “Mothers, grandmothers, fathers, sons and daughters - we’re losing daily. We’re fighting a war.”

MBPD officials said they hold those who sell drugs in the local community accountable.
